FAA Awards Contract for ATC Training

University of Oklahoma Outreach has won a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Air Traffic Instructional Support Services contract, providing for a base and four one-year options totaling $132 million. The contract supports the FAA Air Traffic Academy's initial and specialized training for all current and future air traffic controllers. In addition, the contract provides support for air traffic courseware development at the Academy and air traffic field facilities nationwide. Support for international air traffic training and courseware development for approximately 22 different countries is also provided by the contract. Administered by the College of Continuing Education, a unit within Outreach, the university's FAA/ATC program has provided support to the FAA since 1981. With more than 300 employees, the OU department currently runs two shifts and assists the FAA in training approximately 2,500 air traffic controllers each year. The Oklahoma City-based training center is the largest concentration of Department of Transportation employees outside of Washington, D.C. The award represents the largest training grant in OU's history. The OU staff consists of air traffic control instructors, instructional systems design specialists, educational specialists, computer systems analysts and computer programmers, as well as support and administrative staff.
