EMB190 Receives ETOPS Approval

The FAA has endorsed the Brazilian Regulator ANAC's 75 minute ETOPS approval for the 114 passenger twin-jet. This Extended Range Twin-engine Operation license allows EMB190 crews to fly routes that would be within a maximum 75 minutes of a suitable diversion airport - were an engine failure to occur. It is seen as an endorsement of an engine/airframe combination's proven reliability and allows much more economic Point A to Point B operations across oceans and remote areas. The next logical step is an approval for 120 minute ETOPS, and Embraer is known to be working on this. The ability to operate 120 mins from a suitable airfield will open up many long thin routes for the jet ("long" as in leg distance and "thin" meaning small passenger loads). This is an important attribute for a jet that is reliable, economic and required to operate a high frequency service to remote regional areas. 1188 of the so-called E-Jets (sporting between 70 and 120 seats) have now been sold world-wide.
