Doubts at DoT Inspector General's Office on Future ATC Manning
A nicely rounded figure of 15,000 air traffic controllers will be required over the next ten years according to the FAA. That's to replace wastage, resignations and retirements. On 21 May the Department of Transportation's Office of Inspector General (OIG) announced that it is about to embark upon a study to validate those figures and examine whether the training regime that the FAA has in place will be able to cope. DoTIG will be looking at timing and costs, as well as the effectiveness of the current recruiting campaign. One concern is that ab initio and under training controllers will be placing an additional burden upon the experienced controllers. The under-training "on-the-job" population will be as high as 25% of the controller work-force.
