Cuban Army Officer Killed in Hijack Attempt
Two Cuban Army deserters attempted to hijack a 737 of Spain's Hola Airlines at Havana Airport's domestic terminal on Thursday. They were arrested but not before killing an unarmed military officer onboard the aircraft. The deserters had earlier commandeered a city bus and driven it onto the terminal ramp. Three deserters had been on the run since Sunday, but one of them had been captured earlier. The two 19 year olds and a 20 year old had abandoned their guard posts at the Tank base at Managua 25kms south of Havana. The deserters were armed with AK47 assault rifles and reportedly used them in an attempt to resist security forces. Cuban authorities are blaming an overt US policy of allowing automatic residency for Cubans who escape to the USA. The last domestic hijackings were in March 2003 when two domestic passenger planes were forced to fly to Key West Florida. One of these was a Russian AN-24 with 31 people aboard. The 737 was on wet lease to Cuba's airline Cubana and was being prepared for a scheduled flight to Venezuela. The plane had arrived from Santiago and, fortunately, all the passengers had already disembarked. Only the crew were left, and they escaped through a cockpit window (presumably after locking the cockpit door). In April 2003 three men who hijacked a Havana Bay ferry in a bid to cross the Florida Straits were executed by firing squad.
