Boeing 737 Loses Engines During Takeoff
A Nationwide Airlines Boeing 737-200 with more than 100 people onboard lost one of its two Pratt & Whitney JT8D engines during takeoff on Nov. 7 from Cape Town International Airport. The passenger jet circled the field and dumped fuel until the runway was cleared of debris, then successfully made an emergency landing. There were no injuries among the passengers and crew. The South African air carrier said in a statement that “the right engine separated from the wing. The aircraft continued to climb out. The aircraft returned and landed at Cape Town International Airport without further incident.” The South African Civil Aviation Authority is investigating the accident. It is reported that at least four other 737s have lost engines due to failures of mounting bolts.
