Bad Sunday for Aviation

At least 68 people were killed when a Boeing 737-219 (EX-009) crashed Aug. 24 after departing Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan for Tehran-Mehrabad Airport (THR) in Iran.. The crew was attempting to return to Manas International (FRU) after reporting technical problems ten minutes after its departure. It is believed that two dozen people on board survived the crash six miles from the airport. The flight reportedly carried 83 passengers and a seven-member crew. Iran Aseman Airlines Flight 6875 was carried out by Itek Air.

Elsewhere, the NTSB sent a Go Team to investigate an airplane accident in a remote area about three miles south of the Canyonlands Field Airport (CNY) near Moab, UT. The Beech A100 King Air (N601PC) crashed Aug. 24, killing all ten on the twin engine aircraft, the pilot and nine passengers who worked at a dematology clinic. One of the victims was a woman who got engaged the night before.

Also on Aug. 24, the Safety Board dispatched a team of investigators to Cabanas, Zacapa, Guatemala, to assist in the investigation of a fatal accident in which a Cessna CE-208 Caravan turboprop (Guatemalan reg. unknown) with 14 on board, crashed during a forced landing. The airplane was being operated by Aereo Ruta Maya airlines.  The aircraft was transporting U.S. humanitarian workers when it crashed in a field about 60 miles east of Guatemala City. It is reported that the fatal accident occurred about 45 minutes after takeoff, with the pilots reporting engine problems and attempting an emergency landing. Eight aid workers, including five Americans, were killed along with the two pilots. There were reportedly as many as four survivors.
