Another LAX Runway Incursion

A Delta 767 missed a hold-short line Tuesday at LAX whilst taxiing in after landing and encroached upon the runway flight strip that's needed to guarantee wingtip-to-nose clearance for airplanes taking off. The pilot woke up at the last moment as he heard an air traffic reminder - and the aircraft suddenly lurched to a halt, just inside the flight strip. Delta Airlines Flight 115 had just arrived from Atlanta and needed to cross the parallel runway to get to its gate. As a Kittyhawk 747 accelerated down the runway that the 767 was about to mistakenly cross, the controller noticed the 767 was past the stop sign and about to enter the runway. The controller asked quickly of the 767 "Confirm you are holding short?" and watched the aircraft quickly grind to a sudden halt as the Kittyhawk freighter rotated a short distance away. This will go down in the books as the fourth LAX incursion this year. A May 24 report released by David A. Dobbs, Principal Assistant Inspector General for Auditing and Evaluation for the FAA made the point that runway incursions are still a paramount matter of concern. However the FAA record is one of reacting to accidents and not relatively uneventful, yet reportable, incidents. LAX is undergoing a major runway and taxiway reconfiguration which (it is hoped) should address many of these "crossing the inner runway inadvertently" incidents. Related Article
