American Faces Maintenance Penalty
American Airlines is on the verge of getting hit by a civil penalty for significant lapses in Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul work, according to government and industry officials.
The FAA is poised to impose a civil penalty on the air carrier that could reach as much as $20 million, the largest the agency has levied against any airline.
In a related development, a report scheduled for release this week by The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) is expected to throw a spotlight on multiple failures by American Airlines to identify and quickly resolve MRO shortcomings that go as far back as 2008. The alleged violations range from chronic deferrals of repairs to mechanics signing off on work without the proper authority.
