Airbus on Ice

Australia’s SkyTraders plans to land an Airbus A319 on a blue ice runway in Antarctica in February, making it the first such landing for Airbus. The flight will launch the government’s Antarctic Air Service to Casey Station and reduce travel time between Australia and Antarctica by six hours – from 10 hours to four. Ten to 20 flights are scheduled for the 2007/8 summer season. Researchers will substantially increase their “ice time” since currently they must plan their trips for the Aurora Australis’ three re-supply ships annually. More
