Air Safety Warning for Europa Classic
The UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) issued a warning on July 11 about the safety of the Europa Classic light plane following the deaths of two men in a June 1 crash in South Wales. The Popular Flying Association issued two airworthiness bulletins in respect to the Europa Classic requiring immediate and repetitive inspections. Examination of the wreckage at the accident site showed that the aircraft had suffered an in-flight structural failure, causing the wings and tailplane to break off from the fuselage, fatally injuring the aircraft’s two occupants. Although saying the accident investigation is at an early stage, the AAIB stated that “irregularities have been found with the structure of the right wing to which the rear lift/drag is installed. There is also evidence of movement of the tailplane surfaces beyond the normal range of movements, possibly as a result of flutter. Evidence has been found which may have immediate airworthiness implications to the aircraft type,” the AAIB added.
