ATSB Wants Better Controller Training

Prompted by a review of a near midair near Brisbane in August 2005, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) recommended the government review the guidance and training for Australian air traffic controllers with an eye toward improving judgment when advising pilots of nearby aircraft. The incident involved a Metroliner which aborted its landing while unaware that the action would take the aircraft into the path of a departing 717. This recommendation echoes repeated efforts by the US National Transportation Safety Board to impose in-cockpit runway alert systems to counter the increasing number of runway incursions in the US, most involving regional aircraft.
