In response to increases in runway incursions nationally, the
FAA installed the Final Approach Runway Occupancy Signal (FAROS) system at Long Beach Airport as part of a year-long evaluation. The system was placed at the airport's 10,000-foot primary runway. FAROS is a bank of four lights on the side of the runway that blink to warn pilots on approach when another plane has entered the danger zones on the runway. The lights shine steadily for a clear runway but begin to blink when planes on the ground turn on or cross an active runway, tripping buried sensor loops. The new system still does not address NTSB’s recommendation for a cockpit alert system.
