Three British Muslim citizens were convicted on Sept. 8 of conspiracy to commit murder in an aviation terror plot, but the jury did not reach a verdict on whether they actually targeted transatlantic jetliners with liquid explosives. The jury failed to convict four other alleged co-conspirators but one man was acquitted of the charges he faced in the UK court. The case caused chaos during the 2006 summer vacation season and the continued ban on large amounts of liquids not purchased beyond airport checkpoints. The failure to get convictions on the more serious charges is viewed as a setback for counter-terrorism agencies on both sides of the Atlantic. It is possible that the UK might seek a retrial.
