LAX Northern Runways Lateral Spacing Insufficient

The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) has endorsed opinions by pilots using the North Airfield at Los Angeles International Airport that the planned separation of the parallel runways is insufficient. They are claiming that the lateral allowances will not accommodate the coming generation of super-jumbo jets. LAX services by the A380 is only a year away. The Airport Commission had decided that the runway's separation, now at 700ft, should be increased to 1040ft. ALPA wants that 340ft extra separation to read 443ft. The complication is that this would nudge the airport's northern boundary into the already "invaded" adjacent community of Westchester. The Airport Commissioner will now hold public meetings and produce further studies for consumption at subsequent meetings. Existing studies are (and subsequent ones will be) accessible at tinyurl.com/37xt65
