The Indonesian Government has decided to proceed with a recovery attempt on the Adam Air Flight 574 recorders from the 737 that crashed into the sea off Sulawesi on 01 January. The Director General for Air Transportation at the Transportation Ministry, Budhi M. Suyitno, said the search for the Flight Data and Cockpit Voice Recorders was expected to continue until early July. Budhi said the decision was made after discussions were held with air transportation safety boards in the United States and Australia. They had aired their concerns over air safety standards in Indonesia. "We have met them and they are insistent about us retrieving the black boxes," he said. The search is predicted to cost between US$5 million and $6 million and the recovery costs would be additional to that. There is no indication that any part of the wreckage or bodies entombed in the fuselage would also be recovered. The wreckage lies at a depth of around 1200 meters and its position is known to an accuracy of a few square kilometers. A search contractor is yet to be appointed.
