The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced that public meetings will be held on its proposal to establish an air defense identification zone (ADIZ) around Washington, D.C. The FAA earlier had said a public venue would be provided to hear comments on the proposed ADIZ, and it has extended the period for written comments to Feb. 6 (see ASW, Nov. 14, 2005).

The proposed ADIZ is enormously controversial, as evidenced by the more than 18,000 comments received in opposition (see ASW, Nov. 14, 2005). Persons desiring, either individually or on behalf of their organizations, to comment verbally on the proposal have an opportunity to do so at one of two public meetings, details of which are as follows:

  • Jan. 12, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., Sheraton Columbia Hotel, 10207 Wincopin Circle, Columbia, Md. The deadline to submit a request to make an oral statement is Jan. 5.
  • Jan. 18, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and 6:30 to 9 p.m., Washington Dulles Airport Marriott (Salon A, B, and C), 45020 Aviation Drive, Dulles, Va. The deadline to submit a request to make an oral statement is Jan. 11.

Requests to make a public statement should be directed to Noreen Hannigan, Office of Rulemaking (ARM-106), FAA, 800 Independence Ave., SW, Washington, D.C. 20591; tel: (202) 267-7476, fax: (202) 267-5075.

A panel of government experts will be present (one presumes the Transportation Security Administration will be among them). The FAA indicates that comments are particularly desired on three questions:

  • What has been the effect of the airspace restrictions on aircraft owners that relocate outside the Washington, D.C., ADIZ? And, particularly, what has been the loss of income for those aircraft owners?
  • What has been the loss in time and revenue of pilots flying longer routes to avoid the DC ADIZ or curtailing their flying because of the DC ADIZ?
  • What is the percentage of reduction in overall flying because of the existence of the DC ADIZ?
