Union: Mx Layoffs Coming at Air Canada

The Intl Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW) Local District 140 is warning that a recent Transport Canada action will result in layoffs and temporary job reductions at Air Canada. According to the union, TC’s decision to approve the airline’s request to elongate the intervals between heavy checks for Airbus A319 and A320 series aircraft could lead to “significant” reductions in the workforce. “Any mention of exact numbers at this point would be premature because we have further talks regarding this issue, scheduled for early January 2010,” says Chuck Atkinson, District 140 president and directing general chairperson. IAMAW represents more than 11,000 Air Canada workers.
