TIA Could See 400 New Jobs

The empty US Airways hangar at Tampa International Airport now has both Pemco World Air Services and Astar Air Cargo Holdings vying for the space. Pemco maintains jets for commercial carriers and wants to expand into Tampa this year with hopes to bring 400 new jobs by 2009. Astar, a leasing company, wants to move it overnight maintenance from Orlando to Tampa and build a heavy maintenance operation that would also employ 400 workers. When US Airways closed the hangar in 2002, 300 mechanics and other workers lost their jobs. Whichever company buys the hangar, aviation mechanics and technicians may be able to find new employment.
