Southwest Violations: Quandary for FAA
The discovery of unauthorized parts on Southwest Airlines jets has created a series of tough questions over whether the FAA should require the carrier to ground up to 82 Boeing 737s. Southwest was forced to ground 46 aircraft on Aug. 22 after regulators uncovered the unapproved parts — exhaust gate assembly hinge fittings — which led to major flight delays. FAA granted a 10-day extension on Aug. 23, keeping the aircraft in service while Southwest works on the problem. The airline expected to replace fittings on around 30 aircraft by early Monday, but faces a Tuesday deadline to avoid further groundings.
