One Aircraft a Day for Nationwide

In early November, Nationwide Airline’s flight CE723 departed from Cape Town and during the take off roll, as the nose wheel lifted from the ground, the captain heard a loud noise immediately followed by a yaw of the aircraft to the right. On confirmation of the flight-deck instrumentation, it was apparent that the number two engine failed. Simultaneously, some passengers onboard as well as people at the airport saw that the engine had separated and detached from the wing. The aircraft landed without further incident. There were no injuries sustained by anyone on board or on the ground. Nationwide is now aiming to have one aircraft a day cleared by the CAA and returned to service, a recovery plan that would see the airline resume full operations in slightly more than two weeks. This plan is subject to the inspection process continuing smoothly and the CAA giving each aircraft a clean bill of health within this timeframe. Nationwide has already resumed selected services using its Boeing-767 which was cleared for take-off last Thursday, a day after the CAA agreed to allow independent aircraft maintenance company Safair to inspect the airline's fleet of 17 aircraft to fast-track the safety clearance process.
