Three members of a maintenance unit were among seven people convicted in Palermo, Italy for their roles in an August 2005 crash. The Tunisian Tuninter ATR72 went down off the coast of Sicily, resulting in the deaths of 16 people. The airline’s head of maintenance, chief mechanic and maintenance squad leader all received eight-year sentences, while two other members of the maintenance crew were acquitted. The judge handed out 10-year sentences to the pilot and copilot of the aircraft. All of those convicted have said they will appeal. Niky Persico, a lawyer for one of the victims, told
ANSA.it that “this was an unprecedented sentence but we have always maintained that it was an unprecedented incident.”
