Midcoast now offers BlackBerry users the opportunity to stay connected while in flight enhancing its office-in-the-sky capabilities. The company has already performed the installation on a Gulfstream IV and two Bombardier Global Express aircraft. This system requires minimum user interaction and is as simple as plugging in the BlackBerry device to the supplied connection in the aircraft cabin. An onboard pen-tablet computer serves as the interface device between the BlackBerry and the aircraft’s high-speed data SATCOM system. Once connected, the user will be able to send and receive email, and synchronize contacts, calendars and tasks. This solution requires the aircraft’s SATCOM system be equipped with high-speed data service to enable worldwide BlackBerry connectivity. “Any aircraft with an existing SATCOM system can be upgraded to provide high-speed data service to enable this solution,” said Rodger Renaud, senior vice president, completions. “No STC is required.”
