FAA Plans Fine for AA Safety Violations
The Federal Aviation Administration has nearly completed an investigation into wiring issues in 290 MD-80s in the American Airlines fleet. The inquiry could result in one of the largest fines in the agency’s history. FAA grounded hundreds of flights in April 2008 as a result of the wiring problems. American maintains that the safety of its aircraft was never in jeopardy. According to media reports, the fine could be in the “same ballpark” as the $10.2-million penalty against Southwest Airlines in March 2008 that was eventually settled for $7.5 million.
