FAA Issues Lycoming Crankshaft SAIB

The crankshaft in Lycoming direct-drive reciprocating engines is the subject of a special airworthiness information bulletin (SAIB) published by FAA on Sept. 10. If they have experienced a propeller strike, all Lycoming VO-360 and IVO-360 engines, except for O-320H, O-360-E, LO-360-E, TO-360-E, LTO-360-E and TIO-541 series engines, must be in compliance with AD 2004-10-14, which involves replacement of the crankshaft gear bolt, “before further flight.” FAA notes that in addition to the AD, Lycoming requires engine disassembly and inspection before the engine returns to service.
