EASA Cites Airbus Maintenance, Design as Safety Factors

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) recently issued this statement, to explain why there have not been any fuel tank explosions to Airbus aircraft. "To estimate the likelihood of an event to one manufacturer’s airplanes by extrapolating the event rate of a different manufacturer’s aircraft, without comparing their designs, is a fundamentally flawed technique. The ‘explanation’ is more likely to be that Airbus aircraft are of a different design, have no high power (fuel pump) wiring in the tanks, do not heat the tanks as much, have automatic fuel pump shutoff when the tanks are dry, [and] do not rely so frequently on the use of PMA spare parts.” More
