Australia Develops Maintenance Technology

The Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO), part of Australia’s department of defense, developed a system that remotely tests and monitors an aircraft’s temporary repairs. When bonded composite patches are used to fix cracked or corroded areas of an aircraft, those patches must be monitored. The DSTO developed the Smart Patch, which relays information from those composite patches in real-time for on-the-ground analysis. This continuous assessment during flight time reduces the need for periodic spot checks and can provide early warnings on potential patch problems. The Smart Patch generates power through the materials they are made from and produces an electric charge when it is stressed. The DSTO is testing the Smart Patch now for use on Australia’s aging aircraft.
