American Mulls Closure of Mx Base

In response to a global economy that is weakening demand and shrinking its fleet, American Airlines is considering the future of its three maintenance bases, in Fort Worth, Texas, Kansas City, Mo. and Tulsa, Okla. “With our fleet the size it is today, we may not need three maintenance bases,” Tom Horton, CFO of American parent AMR Corp., told attendants of a JP Morgan airline conference on Tuesday. American has cut its aircraft fleet by 100 and is scaling back on passenger service in response to lower demand, with plans to decrease domestic service by nine percent and international by three percent during 2009. Other airline executives at the conference echoed Horton’s comments about the sagging demand in the market.
