Business jet manufacturer Gulfstream Aerospace has opened a new facility for research and development near Savannah Intl Airport in Georgia. Phase II of a 7-year expansion plan involves a 108,750-square-foot office building and 80,500-square-foot laboratory that will employ up to 700 people. During a dedication ceremony on Aug. 22, General Dynamics Chairman and CEO Nicholas Chabraja, Gulfstream President Joe Lombardo and Pres Henne, senior VP of programs, engineering and test, revealed a plaque honoring the efforts of Gulfstream researchers over the past 50 years. The ceremony follows the company’s anniversary celebration of the GI’s first flight, which took place on Aug. 14, 1958. Phase II includes more than a dozen labs focusing on advanced composites, flight deck technology, acoustics, 3D modeling, rapid prototyping, interior design, cabin systems and other specialized research. The first phase of the R&D complex opened in March 2006.
