The Federal Aviation Administration is proposing a total of $7.1 million in civil penalties for American Airlines maintenance lapses and other safety violations. The agency notes several examples, including that American used the incorrect provisions of its minimum equipment list (MEL) to return two MD-80s to service in December 2007, flying the aircraft 58 times in violation of
FAA regulations.
FAA believes that the large fines are justified because the airline “was aware that appropriate repairs were needed, and instead deferred maintenance. In intentionally continuing to fly the aircraft, the carrier did not follow important safety regulations intended to protect passengers and crew.”
