[Avionics Today 12-24-2014] Airbus Defence and Space has introduced a new radar system, “Spexer 500 AC,” designed to prevent aircraft from colliding with wind turbines. The radar warns pilots about possible collisions by detecting approaching airborne objets at an early stage and by switching on the beacon system.

According to the French aerospace manufacturer, the radar will be “integrated on an exclusive basis into the airspeed beacon system made by the wind power company EnerTrag. Spexer 500 AC is also capable of detecting small flying objects within a small radius. Germany’s Air Traffic Control (ATC) authority, Deutsche Flugsicherung, has certified the radar based on recent flight testing.
