[Avionics Today April 10, 2014] Embedded safety and software security provider LynuxWorks announced the "upcoming availability" of its LynxOS-178.2.2.3, an FAA Level A Real-Time Operating System (RTOS).

LynxOS-178 is the first Commercial-off-the-Shelf (COTS) system to receive Reusable Software Component (RSC) acceptance from the FAA for DO-178B certification. LynuxWorks believes the RSC certification will be well received by avionics developers looking for a speedier path to system integration.

Built using power architecture processors, John Blevins, director of product marketing at LynuxWorks, says the system is designed for use on "the next generation of avionics platforms." The system also offers either a native POSIX API or a FACE compliant programming interface for software migration.

“New optimizations in the product will also offer better performance and memory utilization for avionics developers to manage the Size, Weight, Power and Cost (SWaPC) for their new designs," said Blevins.
