Hundreds of avionics maintenance professionals and avionics engineering executives are gathering in Memphis, Tenn., this week to address emerging cockpit and cabin technologies and discuss ongoing maintenance issues at the AMC Open Forum and AEEC General Session. FedEx is the sponsor of this year’s event.

FedEx Senior Vice President of Technical Operations Greg Hall kicked off the event Monday, saying the world’s largest cargo carrier is investing in new technologies, including head-up displays and enhanced flight vision systems installed on all over-the-water aircraft, and Counter MANPADS. "If you look at new technology, we have to get off legacy-based systems," he said. Investing in education is of the utmost importance as well, he said, encouraging students in high school and college to enter the aerospace engineering and maintenance fields. He said FedEx is hiring AMTs at a "very crisp rate."

The AEEC is addressing the equipage and standards concerns relating to new, emerging technologies, including in-flight connectivity, automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B), data communications and navigation systems.
