An Innovative Leader in Safety and Efficiency

Honeywell Aerospace is a leading global provider of integrated avionics, engines, systems and service solutions for aircraft manufacturers, airlines, business and general aviation, military, space and airport operations. Honeywell’s vast product, service and technology portfolio is building a world that is safer and more secure, more comfortable and energy efficient, and more productive and innovative. With a leading position in each sector of the aerospace industry, we focus here on two growing needs where Honeywell is demonstrating that commitment: air traffic modernization and condition-based maintenance.

Air Traffic Modernization for Improved Safety & Efficiency

Honeywell is taking an active leadership role to provide NextGen and air traffic modernization technologies and products that benefit the economy and the environment as well as promote safety and efficiency. The company’s leadership in this area is evident in that Honeywell is the only U.S.-based company to sign a membership agreement with the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) program.

Honeywell’s vision for air traffic modernization is clear: implement technology available today and build on it to make flight safer, more environmentally friendly and more affordable. Our SmartPath™ ground-based augmentation system (GBAS) supports that vision.

A Closer Look at SmartPath: An ATM Solution

Both FAA and SESAR have identified replacement of instrument landing systems (ILS) with GBAS technology as critical to improving air traffic capacity. Honeywell’s SmartPath™ precision landing technology is the first and only GBAS to receive FAA’s system design approval.

SmartPathâ„¢ is a cost-effective GBAS that is used to identify and correct small errors in GPS satellite signals, transmitting this information to arriving and departing aircraft. A single Honeywell system can support landing operations on multiple runways simultaneously, eliminating the need for multiple ILS systems at airports with more than one runway. This means one SmartPathâ„¢ system installed in a typical airport can save up to $400,000 in annual maintenance costs compared to a single ILS.

SmartPathâ„¢ yields additional savings and benefits by providing precision approach capability to all runway ends to maximize airport capacity in all visibility conditions. This minimizes delays and diversions, saving fuel and reducing emissions all while significantly contributing to safer operations.

Condition-based Maintenance for Higher Productivity

Rising maintenance costs, aging equipment and the pressing need to increase uptime are driving operators and fleet managers to seek new repair technologies to help maximize the deployment and efficiency of their assets. Honeywell is at the ready with a full range of condition-based maintenance solutions. These products allow less time and fewer resources to be spent on unscheduled repairs and more attention to be focused on proactive diagnostics and planned maintenance intervals — keeping equipment in service when and where it is needed.

A Closer Look at Zing: A Total CBM Solution

Honeywell’s Zing™ products provide aircraft, helicopter and industrial machinery operators a range of diagnostic tools to keep aircraft at optimum operating condition. At its core, Zing is a scalable system of embedded sensors that capture vehicle or machinery health data on mission-critical components and suggest maintenance procedures to increase readiness and decrease vehicle maintenance costs.

Zingâ„¢ HUMS (Health Usage Monitoring System) products collect, process and interpret data generated by components within the drive train, including engines, gearboxes, shafts, fans, rotor systems and other dynamic components.

Zingâ„¢ Test provides ground-based diagnostic systems that process and display maintenance data and corrective actions.

Zingâ„¢ Ware is a suite of software and Web-based systems designed to assist operators with managing operational costs by avoiding unanticipated down time. The software runs on any PC-based laptop for at-aircraft diagnostics. The data transferred from the Zingâ„¢ on-board or portable data acquisition systems provide aircraft status, recommended maintenance actions and aircraft trends.

Zingâ„¢ Services are fleet-level planning tools that help fleet managers develop, publish and monitor prioritized tasks such as designating maintenance collection points, scheduling repair and recovery teams, establishing repair parts distribution plans and linking to electronic tech manuals.
