Universal Avionics, Tucson, Ariz., completed an installation of its Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS)-enabled flight management system in Astra aircraft. The installation, which was completed by Global Aviation, of Hillsboro, Ore., was of Universal’s dual UNS-1Ew WAAS/SBAS-FMSs, and was the first certification approval for the WAAS/SBAS-FMS in an Astra, Universal said. The UNS-1Ew installation was approved for 3-D-coupled WAAS GPS approach types, including Localizer Performance with Vertical Guidance (LPV) procedures.  “This installation demonstrates that upgrading to WAAS can be accomplished with minimal downtime, often during regularly-scheduled maintenance,” says Dan Reida, Universal’s vice president of marketing.
