L-3 Communications Avionics Systems received an FAA Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) and Parts Manufacturer Approval (PMA) for its IRIS Infrared Imaging System on multiple King Air platforms. The STC includes an Approved Model List for many of the King Air 90, 200 and 300 series aircraft. The L-3 IRIS installation includes the KMD-850 Multi-Function Display. The camera mounting uses an existing approved fiberglass fairing L-3 has been supplying to the C90 market under its original STC. L-3 said IRIS uses infrared images to allow pilots to see obstacles ahead of the aircraft that may not be visible due to poor conditions or darkness. The camera uses unique sensor technology to provide a high-resolution infrared image with a level of fidelity comparable to more expensive units.
