FAA awarded a supplemental type certificate for satLINK, an Iridium satellite-based voice and data communications made by Avionica, based in Miami, for Boeing 757 and 767. FAA STCs ST03529AT and ST03529AT have been granted to Avionics Support Group (ASG), who kit fabrication and installation for this product. Avianca, the second oldest airline in the world, was the launch customer. The Boeing 787 Test Fleet will also launch with satLINK on board, and will soon be joined by Continental’s Boeing 757 fleet. In early January, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council approved standards and recommended practices that permit Iridium Satellite to provide Aeronautical Mobile Satellite (Route) Services for commercial aircraft on transoceanic flights.
