Virgin America Begins Revenue Operations

Start-up airline Virgin America was to conduct inaugural flights today from New York Kennedy and Los Angeles International airports to its home base at San Francisco International Airport.

Virgin America’s Airbus A320s feature the latest in cabin mood lighting and the interactive "Red" inflight entertainment system, with plugs for laptops and other portable electronic devices.

The cabin lighting system was custom developed with Airbus and Diehl Luftfahrt Elektronik. It feature color tones and levels that gradually change over time; daylight, dusk, sleep and dawn modes; and personal overhead reading lights.

The Red IFE system was developed by the team of Panasonic Avionics, Anomaly, CoKinetic Systems Corporation, IMS, Inflight Canada, Pace Communications, Spafax and Wunderman.

Virgin America said it will serve as many as 10 cities within its first year of operation, and up to 30 cities within five years.
